DST India: Call For Proposal Under Water Technology Initiative

The Department of Science & TechnologyIndia has carved out a “Major initiative on Water Technologies in the Eleventh Plan”. The focus of DST’s efforts will be on developing low-cost and Indigenous house-hold water filter for providing safe drinking water, primarily in rural settings.

Hybrid concepts to derive synergy of various technologies to enhance their combined effectiveness would be consciously encouraged for development. Purification processes based on novel materials would be identified and developed into a proven technology system backed by scientific field trials. Applied research work to be carried out by academic/R&D institutions in association with industry, wherever feasible would also fall in the ambit of the programme.

The University of Kashmir, Srinagar is proud to announce the National Symposium On Water Resources In India:Concerns, Conservation and Management from 13-15, October 2008.

The following themes have been identified for the Symposium:

- Surface and Groundwater Resources Assessment.
- Snow and Glacier resources in Himalayas and its economic
importance
- Society and Sustainable water Resources development
- Climate change and water resources
- Lakes and Wetlands; water quality, biotic resources and their management.
- Land Water Interactions

Abstracts of up to about 500 words are sought on the above mentioned themes and should be submitted electronically to the Organizing Secretary of the National Symposium by / before August 15, 2008. The full-length paper should be sent only after the acceptance of the abstract and the deadline for the full paper submission is October 1, 2008.

Forum for Policy Dialogue on Water Conflicts in India invites abstracts for papers on “Contending Water Uses and Users and Inter-Sectoral Equity in South Asia: Cases and Learnings for a New Policy, Legal and Institutional Framework” for the International Conference on Water Resources Policy in South Asia, to be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka during December 18 - 20, 2008, organized by South Asia Consortium for Interdisciplinary Water Resources Studies (SaciWATERs).

Those who have already sent abstracts under the theme, “Inter-sectoral water allocations, negotiations and conflicts” to conference@saciwaters.org or to Anjal Prakash of SaciWATERs need not send abstracts again as these abstracts would also be considered for this session.

Call for Participants: Global Citizens’ Climate Change and Water Film Festival

The First Global Citizens’ Climate Change and Water Film festival will be launched in Tokyo, Japan at the China-India-Japan Forum in July 2008. This film festival will then travel to countries such as India, China, Korea, USA, Greece, New Zealand and others up to December 2009.

About the Film Festival:

This film festival aims to bring to the forefront the youth of various nations in an intergenerational partnership to harness the tremendous power of change and vitality in them. The festival is meant to be organised with the help of local institutions, colleges, universities, high schools with young people from the hosting organizations acting as co-ordinators.

Water resource issues interact with a wide range of socio-economic and environmental sectors including health, agriculture, biodiversity, public safety, industry and navigation. Indeed, there are few activities that do not in some way depend on or interact with water resources. Hence the need of the hour is to highlight these issues through this youth driven Climate Change and Water Film Festival.

NDTV: India’s Environmentalist!

NDTV has launched an environment based reality show, called India’s Environmentalist, to search for people who are involved in environment protection work.

To expand the reach of the program and to drive this environment movement through the digital medium, a website called Green.NDTV.com has been developed, which is being used to generate entries and engage people with the reality show.

The site has multiple facets to encourage public participation and an exclusive kids interaction area to spark off interest in kids with regard to the environment related issues. The Opinion section carries reports by NDTV journalists that are related to the environment. The site serves to educate people about current challenges to the environment and how to deal with the same.

5th World Water Forum: 2nd Announcement!

The 5th World Water Forum is open, all-inclusive, transparent and multi-stakeholder processes which aim to raise the importance and awareness of water issues and to propose concrete solutions to address global challenges. Turkey will host the world’s largest water related event in İstanbul, 16-22 March 2009.

Given Turkey’s unique position at the cross-roads between continents, regions, cultures and civilizations, “Bridging Divides for Water” has been chosen as the over-arching theme for the 5th World Water Forum.

CII-ITC Sustainability Awards 2008: Recognising & Rewarding Excellence

The Sustainability Awards, instituted by the CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development has been setup to identify and recognise Indian business’s performance in economic, social and environmental dimensions. The awards act as a stage to promote role models achieved by businesses in promoting sustainability. It also imparts knowledge for capacity building activities by Indian Businesses to adopt sustainability practices.

The Awards are administered and presented by the CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development an institution that creates a conducive, enabling climate for Indian businesses to pursue sustainability goals.

Bangalore Film Society, Arghyam, Svaraj- Society for Voluntary Action Revitalization and Justice, Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival, Ithaca College, USA (FLEFF) Mountainfilm in Telluride, USA, Alliance Francaise de Bangalore, Max Muller Bhavan, Bangalore and Water Journeys - Campaign for Fundamental Right to Water are organizing the third International ‘Voices from the Waters’- the biggest international film festival on water in September 2008 following on the footsteps of the hugely popular and successful events in 2005 and 2007. We deeply appreciate your collaboration in this.

This consortium of committed organizations active in water issues are inviting you to be part of this festival by contributing short, documentary, animation and feature films (DVD format only) with English subtitles on water and related issues. Also include a photograph and CV of the film-maker, a minimum of three film stills and a short synopsis of the film. You are also most welcome to send us photographs for exhibition at the festival.
