Submitted by atuljj on February 18, 2010 - 22:45
The test report of water sample to be used for construction of building is as follows:-
1. pH 8.5
2. total solids(ppm) 1713
3. Sulphates(ppm) 1210
4. Chlorides(ppm) 705
Is this water is suitable for construction purpose?
If not then what is the remedy/solution of this which is effective yet not very expensive.

1. Suitability for Construction.
Atul Ji,
As per your test report this water is not fit for construction purpose as the Sulphates are present much higher that the maximum permissible limit of 400 PPM as per IS:456 code. This water will attack the concrete.
If available, kindly dilute this water with some surface water.

2. Dear Atul, Water is one of
Dear Atul,
Water is one of the most important elements in construction but people still ignore quality aspect of this element. The water is required for preparation of mortar, mixing of cement concrete and for curing work etc during construction work. The quality and quantity of water has much effect on the strength of mortar and cement concrete in construction work. The water used for mixing and curing should be clean and free from injurious quantities of alkalis, acid, oils, salt, sugar, organic materials, vegetable growth and other substances that may be deleterious to bricks, stone, concrete or steel.
Presence of salt in water such as Calcium Chloride, Iron Salts, inorganic salts and sodium etc. are so dangerous that they reduce initial strength of concrete and in some cases no strength can be achieved. There is rusting problem in steel provided in RCC.
Presence of acid, alkali, industrial waste, sanitary sewage and water with sugar also reduce the strength of concrete.
This water is not fit for construction as the water is not found conforming to the requirements of IS: 456-2000.
Water should be treated to bring the above parameters within the limits prescribed under IS: 456-2000.

5. Hi all,
I am a civil engineer , water report reflecting H2so4 neutrilization around 42.8 which is more than permissible as per IS 3025, please suggest me to control this parameter ,
THanks
