Required: Standard List of MET Stations - Improving Access to Data
Submitted by iwp on December 16, 2009 - 09:36
At IWP, we have come across digital sources of daily rainfall data, available station wise over a period of 3-4 decades. We are interested to extract and build an application over this base data so that it can be of better value for our users, similar to the MET DATA application (http://indiawaterportal.org/metdata) that we currently have on IWP.
We have come across a problem regarding the consistency in the station names. Across the years, there are several station names that are very similar sounding, and some obviously seem to be grammatical errors.
Is there any way to solve this issue? Is there a standard list of MET stations that we can cross check the current list with. Would any of the members, know any links, resources or people (including in IMD) who can help us solve this problem.
Help on this from the members would be most welcome !

Dear IWP,
A properly built data management system can solve the issues of storing and handling met and other data including hydrological data.
In a data management system, a standard method needs to be defined for naming and adding the stations uniquely.
Under Hydrology Project of India many agencies like CWC, CGWB and State Water Resources and Ground Water Departments started using data management systems. In CWRDM also some work is done in this direction under different projects. These systems are mostly single-user systems for data management at an institution.
To provide web data/information services, multi-user databases are used. World over many agencies like USGS (http://or.water.usgs.gov/usgs_precip/), WMO (http://www.worldweather.org/066/m066.htm) and our IMD (http://www.imd.gov.in/) etc.provide data services through Internet.

3. Standard List of Met Stations
To IWP,
The Central Water Commission (CWC) maintains the National Data Centre (NDC) referred to as Water Information System Data on line Management “WISDOM”. Access this site at http://www.india-water.com/. This data base maintains validated list of all Met Station (Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Orrissa, Gujarat) operated by various Central and State Agencies with lat long values as well as GIS layer.
IWP should write to the CE-NDC located at CMSRS building Olof Palme Marg, Hauz Khas, Near IIT Hostels, New Delhi – 110 016 or mail to nswdc_delhi@yahoo.com for accessing this information.

4. Met station names
Dear Sir,
To my information ISRO hosts a website www.mosdac.gov.in and there is a link to Automatic Weather Station (AWS) database. The AWS are managed by ISRO and IMD.
The MET DATA link of this site is very useful for any orgfanization/professional working on water and environmental issues.

Dear IWP,
IMD archives and supplies rainfall data of raingauge stations of the country. The spelling of the station names are given as information received from regional offices. I am attaching the list of raingauge station for which data are available. However availability of data is not uniform for all these stations and the same may be checked with the National Data Centre of India Meteorological Department, Pune.
Click here to access the list of IMD rain gauge stations in India
