Corrosion In GI Pipes in Supply line: Analysis Required - Water Test Report Attached, Bangalore

I am from Bangalore (Kudlu Gate, off Hosur Road). We are using water from a borewell which is 800 ft deep. We are using this water since past 6 months. The water from the borewell is initially collected in a RCC tank & then pumped to an overhead tank. There is a GI pipe (Jindal make) immersed in the RCC tank on the suction side of the pump. Recently, we noticed that the GI pipe has started rusting & pitting. What could the possible reason of a GI pipe corroding in such short period? Please advise.

Note: We have even got the water tested - All the results are within prescribed range except the Nitrate level is on the higher side 55 mg/l

Test Report attached.

Dear Kunal,

GI pipes are not suitable for casing. The MS or PVC pipes could be used for casing of bore wells.

Dear Mr. Kunal,

Please check the Langlier Index. If it is negative the water may be corrosive. Besides dissolved carbon dioxide in water makes it corrosive. Also check the quality of GI pipe.

Dear Mr.Kunal,

A look at the analysis/test report of your bore well water shows that the pH is 6.55 which is slightly acidic. This is one of the major reasons for the rusting/corrosion of the GI pipe.

GI is no more the most suitable material for water.Plastics like PVS/HDPE/PP are the current materials for pipes. They are inert and do not corrode or rust.It is advisable to change from GI and mild steel if it is also used to one of these plastics.

Dear Kunal,

As per the test report provided by you the main reason seems the less pH value which means that the water is acidic in nature. Further, the chloride & Sulphate are also on higher sides which makes water more corrosive THE REASON BEHIND PITTING OF PIPES. It is better to use PVC pipes for water carrying.
