Pump Selection : Suitability in Low Voltage Situations - Uttar Pradesh
Submitted by iwp on May 12, 2009 - 09:18
I live in a village in UP, India and use hand pump to get water from ground. I want to install a overhead tank in my house. To fill the tank I need to install a pump which will pump the water from ground level to overhead tank. So which type of electric pump is best suited for this purpose?
Following are the specification for the pump:
1. Tank volume = 1000 Liters
2. Tank height from ground = 17 meters
3. Length of the pipe in the hand pump = 120 Feet
4. Avg. voltage supply in my house = 100v to 120v for 6hrs/day (we always face low voltage issue in our village).
Kindly suggest what type of electric pump is best suitable for these above condition?

Dear Santosh,
Try a Kirloskar pump called SHARP or a Crompton pump. These pumps operate at single phase and provide a good head with discharge. Contact nearest Kirloskar or Crompton dealer. Of course, if you use a vertical submersible pump, it shall work. However, it may prove to be costlier and difficult to erect within tank.

Dear Santosh Chaubey,
If the information you have provided by you regarding the voltage availability in your village is correct, then I am sorry no electrical pump will work.
The minimum starting voltage that is required is around 170-180 volts.
One can install single or double step voltage boosters to boost the voltage to the desired level needed by the pump, but like all transformers the winding gets weak every time it is used and over a period of time will get bad.
If you want you could use a handpump to directly fill the overhead tank.
SPAN PUMPS INDIA , a pune based company manufactures such hand pumps which can be used to fill up overhead tanks where there is improper or no electric supply.

Dear Santosh,
Although you state that the average voltage supply in your house is 100-120 volts, it can be sometimes much more than that. Under conditions of fluctuating voltages, transmotors manufactured by the Coimbatore-based Texmo Industries are best suited. These pumps run at variable supply voltage bands because of using multi-strand wires in the coil with winding suitably adjusted by changing connections at the termination points.
By using a transmotor, the supply voltage can be varied to suit the actual supply voltage. You have to however use an electrical or an electronic device to sense the actual input voltage.
The advantages of using transmotors include avoidance of coil burnouts due to voltage fluctuations, reduced heating of the components, higher efficiency and power factor under varying voltage conditions, and easier starting under low voltage conditions.
These pumps can be best obtained from a local dealer of Texmo pumps. You may send the filled-up form at http://www.texmoindustries.com/05_contact_01.htm to get advice direct from the manufacturer on the specifications of the pump best suited for you.
Good luck.

Dear Santosh
You mentioned length of the pipe in handpump is 120 feet. Do you plan to take water from this depth, using it as suction pipe? If this is your plan than please know that no centrifugal pump is available in this world to suck water from this depth.
You will have to manually pump water from 120 feet to ground level and than you can use electric pump to lift this water at 17 mtr height.
Low voltage is not a big problem after installing suitable (2000VA) voltage stablizer in system.
You can lift 1000 ltr water at 20 mtr height in 6 hrs using 0.75 bhp monoblock pump of reputed company. I always like crompton greaves. other equ. are also good.

Dear Santosh Chaubey,
The most suitable pump for pumping water to an overhead tank in a location where the voltage of electricity is only between 100 to 160 volts most of the time. I am sorry but I do not know of any pump that can operate on such a low voltage. One way is to buy a small domestic monobloc pump with a 0.5hp motor and use it only when the voltage is over 200 volts to pump water. Pumps with 0.5 HP for domestic use are widely available all over the country.
