1. Incorrect question. Tap water
Incorrect question. Tap water quality in a city, where ? Take for example Delhi. The quality in Pashim Vihar may be quite different from that in Sarita Vihar. etc. Usually, the tap water quality is adequate at the water treatment plant outlet. It gets polluted due to intake of pollutants in the leaky distribution system. This is a micro level phenomenon, and the entire city can not be clubbed as one.

4. Dear Manish, Information
Dear Manish,
Information regarding the quality of piped water supply can be obtained by the department of drinking water, State departments (for eg Uttar Pradesh, local offices of UP Jal nigam in Lucknow, Kanpur etc) or for specific city for example, Bangalore Water Supply & Sewerage Board for Bangalore.
These departments are supposed to monitor the quality of piped water periodically and should be having the consolidated data on the quality.
Aim of any of these organizations is to treat water so that the quality will be as per BIS 10500.
Details regarding contact persons of these organisations are available on the net.

6. Tap Water Quality supplied by Municipal Corporations of India
Dear Sir,
The quality of treated water in the same municipal corporation may not be uniform at a given time on the same day as the free chlorine content is expected to be high near the treatment plants/ booster pumping stations comparing to the tail end connections. It also vary with seasons as the dissolved matter of the surface & ground water may not be uniform throught the year.
However you will get data of various regions of India from CPHEEO (Central Public Health & Environmental Engineering Organisation , Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India) in its web site http://www.cpheeo.nic.in/ under Technical Reports section, that carried out in recent past.
You can also get data from

10. Tap water quality is not
Tap water quality is not always same for all the areas uder municipal corporation in some parts it source is from surface water (river) wheares in some parts it may be ground water while in some parts it can be mixed supply(surface + ground ) In delhi which ever water is being supplied by Delhi Jal Board to the consumers confirms to BIS - 10500 -1993 and WHO norms except some time it may be contaiminated in the congested locality due to human error but this type of complaint is about o.5 % in a day . Delhi Jal Board has qualified quality control staff who monitor the quality of water 24 hrs all the day in treatment plant then they allow it for supply to abt 1 crore consumer in delhi . Before supplying ground water to the consumers , ground water is also tested in labs . T/Well is only installed when the water confirm the BIS norms . Sometime the quality of ground water change in T/WELL then we paint the T/WELL RED and write the water is not fit for drinking purpose only for washing or bathing purpose , we also spreads awarness among the consumers about the quality of water
Thanks.
