IWMI Requests Data for Watershed Development - Andhra Pradesh

The International Water Management Institute, located in ICRISAT, Hyderabad, is looking for data which could help in a new watershed development (WSD) project which is begining.

This project called "Integrated Assessment of Meso-Level Watershed Development"  will integrate environmental, economic, social, equity and dimensions at meso levels to help ensure that WSD contributes positively to the Indian government’s sustainable livelihoods goal and provide the foundations for a resilient and sustainable WSD.

We are actually doing the selection of the study sites in Andhra Pradesh. One of the two sites would be located in Anantapur district (and a small part in Kurnool district), in Gooty mandal and Peddavadugur mandal.

One of the goals of this project is to develop an integrated groundwater/surface water model, that is the reason why we are actually searching for groundwater data (wells details, lithologs, water level, artificial recharge structures, discharge during pumping test or irrigation pumping, groundwater quality, etc.) and surface water data (details about wetlands and rivers, irrigated area, surface water bodies, tank details, rainfall, surface water quality, etc.).

Hope you could help us in this research.

Best regards,

1. IWMI's request for Data

Dear Mattheieu

I would suggest you to do a good groundwork before data digging.

The first step should be to demarcate the politico-geographical boundary of your meso-watershed.

Once done, this will give you idea in which division, subdivision (taluka), your area falls under. Then you can meet the officials starting at the lowest level of the hierarchial tree in Revenue Dept, Irrigartion Dept, Rural Water supply Dept, Ground Water Authority, Soil & Water Conservation Dept (Sometimes Watershed projects also exist within Districts, which you can check). These departments are the legal custodians of Data which you are looking for.

Therefore, you have to go and meet these officials in person, may be a number of rounds for follow ups to get the results. Please keep in mind, majority of this data is maintained in local language in hard copies. Which you will have to translate and digitize before using.

I can say you good luck in your endeavor.

regards

Saba, IWMI Delhi

2. Composite Watershed Management

The ICRISAT had a 'Comosite Watershed Management'  for a period of about three years, under the leadership of Prof.M.Von Oppen, during the years1985-88. Two watersheds were selected for these studies. One was in Mahabubnagar district and the other was in Anantpur district.

You may be able to obtain reports resulting from this project in the ICRISAT library. The Geohydrology group of National Geophysical Rsearch Institute (NGRI) collaboratyed with ICRISAT on this project. One German scholor,  Mr.Theune, did his thesis under the project. Some of the work, done for the project, also formed parts of two Ph. D. dissertaions, submitted by NGRI scientists participating in this project. Dr. R. Rangarajan of NGRI can be contacted for details.
