But implementing the concept of ecological sanitation is still a tough proposition. The United Nations recognizing the value of the "closed loop" ecosan system is promoting its use, declaring 2008 as the Year of Sanitation. Installing ecosan toilets not only provides a sanitary waste management system, it also creates byproducts that can be sold or utilized as fertilizer. This provides an incentive as chemical fertilizer costs are steadily increasing.
