CDD Society, in partnership with Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association (BORDA), Germany and Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Corporation Limited, Karnataka, will conduct a one-day training programme on Simplified Sewer System on 28th February, 2014 at the Center for Advanced Sanitation Solutions (CASS) in Kengeri, Bangalore.

Overview:

Rapid urbanization and the associated pressure on existing sanitation infrastructure require innovative and affordable solutions for meeting the needs of growing population. According tothe report of the Water and Sanitation Programme of The World Bank: “Economic Impacts of Inadequate Sanitation in India”, only 29.1% of India’s flush/pour-flush latrines are connected to a piped sewer system, principally due to the absence of these costly infrastructures. In the last few years, a new alternative has been developed which more economical, able to provide the same benefits and be both socially and environmentally acceptable to users: the Simplified Sewerage System.

This infrastructure offers the same level of user convenience as conventional sewerage; therefore, it has the potential to provide high-quality low-cost sanitation services in poor urban and congested areas. Combined with decentralised wastewater treatment system, it has enormous potential in contributing to the development of sustainable environmental sanitation. Moreover, it responds to a major requirement of the National Urban Sanitation Policy (NUSP): it facilitates safe collection, treatment and disposal of wastewater.

Recognizing the critical need for competent human resources (consulting organizations, municipal engineers or urban local bodies are not familiar with simplified sewerage system), and the lack of training programmes on this new technology, CDD Society will disseminate appropriate knowledge and skills on this system among professionals in the sanitation sector. This programme provides a unique opportunity to learn more of this innovative approach to collect and convey wastewater for treatment.

Objective:

The training programme aims to introduce and impart engineering skills to participants for design and implementation of simplified sewer system. Applicants for this training programme are from government and/or private organisations (engineers, wastewater management practitioners or other technical experts) with a minimum of 1 to 2 years prior work experience in the water, sanitation, infrastructure and/or wastewater management sector. The package offers interactive sessions, field visits, analysis of case studies, individual and group exercises, imparted by an experienced training team from CDD Society. On successful completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate from CDD Society.

Date & Training Fee:

The Engineers’ Training on Simplified Sewer System will be conducted on 28th February 2014, from 9.00 am to 6.00 pm. As the seats are limited to 20 participants, CDD Society will screen and select the most eligible applicants. The training fee per participant is Rs 8,000/- (145 Euros for international participants). Completed application forms must be sent to CDD Society latest by 21st February 2014. The medium of instruction for the training programme will be English.
