M.Dinesh Kumar,
Water Resources Researcher

At an informal discussion in early 2008, Dinesh Kumar talks about 'green water' and the water consumption involved with dairy farming
The water which is not 'manmade' is green water. Rainfed crops, forest produce all are green water products. By land and water conservation methods such as mulching the productivity of green water can be enhanced.
The importance of green water
Recent research indicates that dairyng in semi-arid areas consumes a lot of water. It takes 3300 litres of water to produce a litre of buffalo milk. Should dairying be encouraged in semi arid areas when it dries up fossil water?
